How to choose sunscreen for your skin type
How to choose sunscreen for your skin type: reading SPF, PA and broad spectrum, chemical or mineral filters, textures for oily, dry and sensitive skin.

Sunscreen is the single most worthwhile product in a skincare routine in Vietnam, yet it is also the one people abandon because it feels greasy, stings the eyes or leaves a white cast. Most of the time that comes from choosing the wrong texture for your skin. This guide explains how to choose sunscreen for your skin type and how to use it properly.
Reading the label: SPF, PA and broad spectrum
- SPF: protection against UVB, the main cause of sunburn. SPF 30 or higher is a sensible everyday choice.
- PA (or "UVA" in a circle, depending on the standard): protection against UVA, linked to tanning and premature ageing. More plus signs mean more protection.
- Broad spectrum: protects against both UVA and UVB. Choose products that say so clearly.
- Water resistant: useful for swimming and exercise; you still need to reapply as directed.
Chemical or mineral filters
| Chemical filters | Mineral filters | |
|---|---|---|
| Texture | Usually thin, clear and easy to spread | Can be thicker and may leave a white cast |
| Suits | People who want a light feel under make-up | Sensitive skin and people who react to chemical filters |
Many products now combine both. What matters most is that you enjoy wearing it every day.
Choosing by skin type
- Oily or acne-prone: gels and light fluids labelled oil-control or non-comedogenic.
- Dry: creams with added moisturising ingredients; you may skip your morning moisturiser if the sunscreen is hydrating enough.
- Combination: lotions or light milks; add a little powder on the T-zone if needed.
- Sensitive: low fragrance, consider mineral filters and patch test first.

Apply enough, and reapply
- Apply as the last step of your morning skincare, before make-up.
- Use about two finger-lengths for face and neck; applying less gives less protection than the label suggests.
- Wait a few minutes for it to settle before make-up.
- Reapply roughly every two hours outdoors, and after swimming, heavy sweating or towelling your face.
- Add a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and covering clothes for long hours in the sun.
Sunscreen for active days and the beach
For a day at the beach, a hike or sport, choose a water-resistant sunscreen and plan to reapply after every swim and whenever you towel off. Do not forget ears, the back of the neck, the tops of your feet and your lips; a lip balm with SPF helps. Seek shade in the middle of the day when the sun is strongest, and remember that sand and water reflect light back onto your skin.
Common misunderstandings
- "I do not need it indoors": UVA passes through window glass, so sitting near a window still counts.
- "A higher SPF means I can apply less": applying enough matters more than chasing a number.
- "Darker skin does not need sunscreen": every skin tone needs protection from UV.
Sunscreen and make-up
If you wear make-up, let your sunscreen set before applying foundation, and press rather than rub so you do not disturb the protective layer. Powders and cushions with SPF are best treated as a top-up, because the amount people apply is usually far too little to reach the protection printed on the label. For reapplying during the day, a sunscreen spray or stick is easier to carry and use over make-up.
Making it a lasting habit
Sunscreen only works if you wear it consistently. If a product stings, feels heavy or pills, switch textures instead of giving up. Not sure of your skin type? Read how to find your skin type or use the skin type finder. If your skin reacts to several sunscreens, ask a dermatologist for advice. Keep a small tube in your bag for reapplying, and store it away from heat so it stays effective until the expiry date.
